Fight of Faith (Faith Series - Final Episode)

Hello Everyone ! Praise the Lord

We have come such a far in this series and finally we are here in our final episode. In this journey of faith, we got to learn many more deepest revelation from the Lord. I would like to give all credit to our almighty omniscient God for He provided every wisdom, knowledge, opportunity and tools for this succession to complete 'Faith Series'.

Introduction : In this final episode we are going to look in to the 'fight of Faith'. So many Christians see this life as a playground instead of a battleground. They have the mentality that as long as I am a Christian then I’ll never have to face the enemy.

According to Dr. Martin Lloyd-Jones's series of commentaries one of the false doctrine that church has been prioritizing is "we must let God do it all for us." That means you have nothing to do as a Christian, but just let God do it all for you. You do not have to overcome, because God will do it for you. They claim it is not our battle but God's. How does Ephesians 6:10 relate to us in practice, in our day-to-day needs, in our constant warfare against Satan, the world, and our own human nature?

The apostle Paul refutes this false teaching that God does it all for us in his exhortation for us to 'Put on the whole armor of God.' He repeats the exhortation here in Ephesians. As mention by Apostle Paul,

"Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses" - 1 Timothy 6:12

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith" - 2 Timothy 4:7

Paul refers us as 'Soldiers' of God (2 Timothy 2:3-4) and as a soldier we must be prepare for upcoming battles. Many time we do not want to acknowledge and realize that we are in battle zone.

What is fight of faith?

The language used in 1 Timothy 6:12 is more Olympic than battlefield language. Even the different Bible versions I highlighted above suggest the text is drawing parallels from athleticism. The picture portrayed is that of an athlete contending or striving in a marathon race for a prize. The word "fight" (1 Timothy 6:12) in Greek is ἀγωνίζου (agōnizou:आगोनिजु) and is related to ἀγωνιζόμενος (agōnizomenos:आगोनिजुमेनोस) in 1 Corinthians 9:25, which means "to compete in the games."

So it is not true that as a Christian we are not to do anything but to abide in God and He will do all things for us but the truth is we have so much work and responsibility to do as a Christian but we have to do them through the Holy Spirit and with the help and strength of God.

In Philippians 3 Paul spoke of 'pressing toward the goal.'

"Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus" - (Philippians 3 :12-13)

We can see clearly, after being Christian we do not finish the race or   we haven't reached our goal but we just started our race and journey. We still have lot to go.

- 'Fight of Faith' finishes the race:

"Finishing Run is more important than winning it"

Story of Derek Redmond ( 1992 Olympic marathon runner)

Apostle Paul says, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith" (2 Timothy 4:7), here in this verse He didn't mention 'I have won the race...' because that is what today we doing. We want to win the race at any cost but God want us to just finish the race. Each day we are being selfish, self-centered, greedy, over- proudness because somehow and anyhow we want to win the race although it needs to hurt someone but that is worldly way to finish the race.

Our confidence is in the Lord. We are in battle with Goliath. David’s confidence wasn’t in his physical strength or ability. His personal confidence rested squarely upon Jehovah God, Who had delivered him in the past. David had learned that God was always faithful. Look upon God and trust Him completely in your battle.

Paul's life was living proof of what it means to 'fight the good fight of faith'. For example:
  • He was stoned at Lystra (लुस्त्रा) (Acts 14:19) but continued to witness.
  • He was shipwrecked (जहाजको ध्वंस) (Acts 27:27-28:5), but he kept on serving God.
  • He was humiliated by whipping five times (2 Corinthians 11:24), but he still kept the faith.

Paul's faith was tried and tested by many crucibles, but nothing could hold him back. He testified that:

He was unmoved in his belief that he declared, "none of these things move me."

Faith in the 'Fight of Faith' is always active:
Passive faith cannot battle against our enemy. Faith that fights cannot be stopped by failure. we already saw that faith without work is dead faith in the 'faith & Work' episode so God wants our faith to be active and well prepared for battle. Our faith is shield (Ephesians 6:16) against our enemy and their attacks. Without our faith we cannot block the attacks of our enemy.
Robert Schuller’s famous quote:  “Tough times never last but tough people do”!

- Fight of Faith is for right cause i.e Godly cause :
Paul says, "Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize" - 1 Corinthians 9:26-27

Our Battle is not against flesh and blood :

Why battle?
because there is an enemy intent on destroying our lives.
to defend our Testimony.

"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" - Ephesians 6:12

"Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour" - Peter 5:8

The military General who had fought during World War II, George Patton autobiography said, “I learned very early in my life never to take counsel of my fears.”

Keep in mind that before fighting battle Satan will always try to shake the Christian from the ground of faith, by trying to get him to give in to fear. The key issue at the root of our fears is ownership. Who owns your life? If it belongs to you, you may have cause to fear. But if you take the stance that you and all you possess belongs to God, that’s cause for faith.

Our fight is not worldly. We fight for real cause. In our every step we have to deal with attack and punches due to which we might loose our faith. We fight the fight of faith by because it was entrusted to us.

"Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people" - Jude 4

Jude is speaking about 'Stewardship of Faith'. What is stewardship of Faith?

Bible tells us, Jesus is the 'the founder and perfecter of our faith' हाम्रो विश्वास सुरू गर्नुहुने र पुरा गर्नुहुने (Hebrew 12:2) so owner of our faith is Jesus Christ and we are stewards of it. So while Jude was speaking about entrusted faith, he had this concept of stewardship.

Many people do not want to acknowledge this fight and this suffering. It is not uncommon for preachers to use their abilities to present the Christian life as being as easy and as glorious as possible. They explain how Jesus has done everything and as a result we don't have to do anything. They say, “Jesus has suffered for us; He died for us, and He has redeemed us completely. We must only believe in His finished work, and then we will automatically live an overcoming life. As long as we just look up to Jesus, the fruit of the Spirit which we read about in Galatians 5:22 will come.”
